When we think of meditation we usually think of sitting and being still. However a walking meditation or ‘mindful walking’ is another very simple meditation practice that we can incorporate into our everyday lives and is equally as therapeutic.
Mindful walking is especially good for those of us who need more grounding as it increases our awareness of the body and gently brings us back into alignment. When our feet make contact with the ground we are reminded of our connection to mother earth and that we are always supported.
Mindful walking can be done anywhere and at anytime – we can teach you this ancient practice within the beautiful grounds of Silvana and you can apply it to any aspect of your life back home. For example, we can use mindful walking when we are walking to work or going to the supermarket.
In a walking meditation we focus on the act of walking, of moving our body and the steps we are taking. We may have a destination in mind but we don’t walk to get there, we walk mindfully until we get to the destination, no matter how long it takes.
At first it might seem strange to walk with nowhere to go, nowhere to rush to, no purpose in getting anywhere, but as we embrace and accept the walk we fall deep into the healing. As we focus on our walk, not lost in the story of our minds, we begin to notice subtle things that we didn’t have access to before.
The cracking of a branch underfoot, the sound of leaves as they gently fall to the ground, and the distant birdsong are all beautiful aspects of nature to be experienced through mindful walking.
